BLACK GOLD is a public artwork that invites your care and attention. At its core, it is a box—a container of radical possibility. A site that calls participants to take a bold, conscious step toward the future.

Inside the box lies organic waste: food scraps, fallen leaves, paper, cardboard, regrets, wishes—our collective shadows. The project unfolds over time, beginning with the first full moon of 2019 and culminating in a public ritual under the harvest moon. BLACK GOLD offers an opportunity to participate directly, to contribute and reflect, and to experience the act of tending to what we consume.

Though the box’s edges are firm, they are also porous—it breathes. Stand close, and you may hear it. It is also a music box, threaded with brass chimes reminiscent of the carillons of Mechelen. While its exterior is structured, within, a slow alchemy is at work.

To open ourselves to the outer world, we must reconcile with the transformations within. For like the compost, we too are always becoming—shifting, shedding, and growing as part of this living Earth.
